Breaking the Czech Streak on Grass

Eala entered the grass court final carrying a tough 0-12 senior career record against Czech players. She pushed past that mental block with pure grit. After dropping the opening set, the Filipina completely took control of the second to force a decider.

The final set pushed both players to the absolute limit. Bartunkova grabbed an early 2-1 lead before Eala responded with three straight game wins. She eventually broke a tense 5-5 tie to secure the championship.

Here is a quick look at her path to the trophy:

  • Beat Thailand player Mananchaya Sawangkaew in the quarterfinals, as reported by the Philippine News Agency.
  • Overcame a two-hour rain delay to defeat Swiss qualifier Rebeka Masarova in the semifinals.
  • Secured her first title of the 2026 season and her very first tournament win on grass.

Standing Alongside Tennis Idols

Tournament officials proudly announced that Eala now shares the Birmingham roll of honor with actual tennis royalty. Past winners include Billie Jean King, Ash Barty, and Eala’s own personal idol Maria Sharapova.

Eala stayed incredibly grounded during the awarding ceremony. She admitted that lifting the trophy honors her hard work but she still has plenty of room to grow. She explicitly stated that winning this event motivates her to keep improving her overall game.

A Heartfelt Message to Filipino Fans

The stands in Birmingham roared with Filipino fans proudly waving the national flag. Eala made sure to address them directly in her victory speech.

She told the crowd that home is people and not a place. She thanked her fellow Filipinos for braving the unpredictable UK weather to watch her play. Alexa also credited a mix of clear intention and a little luck for pulling her through the tightest moments of the match.
