Beyoncé Celebrates Her Birthday With a Remastered 20th Anniversary Edition of B’DAY

Beyoncé marked her birthday on September 4 with the release of B’DAY (20th Anniversary Edition), giving one of her most important early albums a major refresh.
Originally released on September 4, 2006, B’DAY introduced the world to a 25-year-old artist who was ready to take greater control of her work as a singer, songwriter, producer, and visual artist.
The new edition expands that era with remastered music, upgraded visuals, never-before-seen images, new recordings, remixes, B-sides, and Spanish-language songs.
The Sound Beyoncé Wanted to Create
Beyoncé recorded the original album during an intense two-week session. She approached the project with a clear idea of the sound she wanted, pushing herself and her collaborators to explore a more urgent and energetic style.
“I wanted the album to be big, percussive, hard, up-tempo, and energized, and it was important to me that we used live instrumentation,” Beyoncé recalls.
“Hip-hop was taking over at the time, but I was fighting to preserve the bridges, melodies, and harmonies that have always been at the heart of R&B. The goal was to blend those two worlds through the art of sampling. I loved the minimalism of a beautiful vocal arrangement over a simple drum loop or a classic guitar like ‘Irreplaceable’…but only if that 808 was banging underneath,” she added.
The project became an early example of Beyoncé’s focus on visual storytelling. Short films explored the different stages of a relationship, while themes of confidence, freedom, boldness, and compatibility gave the album a personal edge that still feels relevant 20 years later.
A Fresh Take on the Original Era
The anniversary collection brings new life to the music and visuals that defined B’DAY. The videos, originally filmed on 35mm, have been remastered, re-colored, and finished in 4K.
That includes “Déjà Vu,” featuring JAY-Z and directed by Sophie Muller.
The release also contains never-before-seen photographs captured in New Orleans. Beyoncé has deep family roots in the city, which was rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina when the original album was created.
New Spanish-Language Highlights
Two additions stand out on the expanded collection.
“Cuerpo Tumbao (Get Me Bodied)” features Colombian artist Maluma and includes a sample of Celia Cruz’s “La Negra Tiene Tumbao.” The track connects Beyoncé’s celebration of confidence with her admiration for Cruz and her cultural legacy.
“Irreplaceable (Como La Flor)” featuring Selena is another major moment. The song brings Beyoncé together with the late Mexican American singer, known as the “Queen of Tejano Music.” Selena’s estate rarely approves the use of her music, making the collaboration especially meaningful.
Beyoncé has spoken about hearing Selena on the radio while growing up in Houston and credits her influence on the Spanish-language EP Irreemplazable, released in 2007.
More Music for Longtime Fans
The deluxe vinyl arrives as a four-LP set pressed on 180G Bayou Blue vinyl. It includes a 60-page commemorative booklet and two collectible double-sided art prints.
The collection features “Can I Watch You,” produced by Beyoncé and Pharrell, plus “My First Time,” which was originally recorded for Dangerously in Love but did not make the final album.
Additional B-sides include “Lost Yo Mind,” “Creole,” and “Back Up.”
The 31-track digital deluxe edition mixes the original favorites, new material, remixes, Spanish recordings, and bonus tracks, thus offering the most expansive version of the B’DAY era yet.
