“Filipiñana” Chosen as the Philippines’ Official Entry for the 2027 Oscars

“Filipiñana” is moving forward in the Oscars 2027 race after Rafael Manuel’s film became the Philippines’ official entry for the 99th Academy Awards. The Film Academy of the Philippines selected it for the Best International Feature Film category.
However, “Filipiñana” has not been shortlisted or nominated yet. The film will now enter the Academy’s selection process alongside submissions from other countries.
Why “Filipiñana” Was Selected
A committee of Filipino film-industry experts selected “Filipiñana” under the Film Academy of the Philippines.
According to The Philippine Star, the committee considered the film’s artistic integrity, campaign readiness, and potential to represent Philippine cinema. It also praised its visual style and themes of class, power, labor, and social realities.
What “Filipiñana” Is About
Directed by Rafael Manuel, “Filipiñana” is based on his award-winning short film of the same name.
Jorrybel Agoto plays Isabel, a new tee girl at a country club owned by Dr. Palanca, played by Terry Guzman. The film explores hierarchy, privilege, labor, and class within the exclusive setting.
Two Other Filipino Films Are Seeking Oscar Consideration
Meanwhile, two other Filipino films are pursuing consideration in separate categories.
Carl Joseph Papa’s “58th” is seeking Best Documentary Feature Film, while Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Danelle Romero’s “Agapito” is seeking Best Live Action Short Film.
Unlike these films, “Filipiñana” serves as the Philippines’ official submission for Best International Feature Film.

The December shortlist will be the next major milestone for “Filipiñana.” According to The Philippine Star, no Philippine film has previously been shortlisted or nominated in the International Feature Film category.

The campaign will focus on industry screenings, awareness, and Academy requirements. The Film Academy of the Philippines also plans to seek government support for a wider For Your Consideration campaign.
Until the Academy announces its shortlist, “Filipiñana” should only be called the Philippines’ official entry or submission. Calling it “Oscar-nominated” would be inaccurate.
