Alex Eala is heading into one of the biggest tournaments of the hard-court season with a major advantage. The Filipina tennis star has secured a first-round bye at the 2026 WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Toronto after earning a Top 32 seeding, allowing her to begin her campaign directly in the second round.

The bye is another milestone in Eala’s breakout season as she continues to climb the WTA rankings and establish herself among the world’s top players.

Eala enters the National Bank Open as the tournament’s No. 25 seed, thanks to her career-high WTA ranking of No. 28. As one of the top 32 seeds, she automatically advances to the second round when the tournament begins in Toronto.

The achievement follows several career-defining performances this year. Eala became the first Filipina to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon and captured the WTA 125 title in Birmingham. She also reached the semifinals of the Berlin Open after defeating multiple Top 10 players.

What the bye means

The National Bank Open features a 96-player singles draw, with the top 32 seeds receiving a first-round bye. That means Eala will skip the opening round and start her tournament in the Round of 64, giving her extra time to prepare for her first match.

Receiving a bye is an important advantage in a WTA 1000 event, where players often face a demanding schedule. The additional rest can help competitors adjust to conditions before entering the tournament.

Toronto marks another important stop

The National Bank Open is one of the biggest events leading into the US Open and features many of the world’s top-ranked players, including Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, and Mirra Andreeva. Eala joins the field as one of the tournament’s rising stars after a string of impressive results throughout the season.

The official draw ceremony is scheduled for July 31, while main-draw action begins on August 2. Seeded players like Eala will begin their campaigns on August 4 or 5

Momentum heading into the US Open

Eala’s steady rise has made her one of the most exciting young players on the WTA Tour. Her recent success on both grass and hard courts has raised expectations as she prepares for another opportunity to compete against the world’s best.

With a first-round bye secured, the Filipina star will now look to carry that momentum into Toronto before continuing her North American hard-court swing.
